A Story in 300 Words
In exactly 300 words he is dead. He sees his life flash before his eyes. He is drowning. He is stuck in the mud at the bottom of the river. He strikes the water with a great force. He lets himself fall. He steps off the bridge. He gets out. He stops by the side of the road. There is only one thing left to do. It is all his fault. Why did she leave? He is a ghost of his former self. He has changed. He is being irresponsible. They are right. You need to get a hold of yourself. It's nothing new. They all find something else. Millions of people go through it and survive. You are just feeling sorry for yourself. She can't live like that. Get the fuck up, she says. What's happened to you? Are you going to stay in bed all day again? Don’t worry. Everything will be alright. We’ll get through this together. It’s ok, honey. No luck, huh? There must be something we can do. How can they treat you like that after all these years? He understands. What do you mean rightsizing? The company will ride it out. The market is correcting. It’s not you. You don’t have to attend the meeting. They are thinking of making him partner. Everyone is impressed. He works his way up. He pulls all-nighters. He is driven. He is living the dream. He marries his college sweetheart. His future is bright. He graduates with honours and starts at the firm straight out of college. School is a breeze. Everyone says he is going to be a real success. He gets an A. He knows how he wants his story to go. The title of the assignment is what you hope to be in 300 words.
