note to the end of something
The line "sometimes i get a great notion" is taken from
"Goodnight, Irene" an American folk standard, author/s unknown, first recorded in 1933 by American blues musician Huddie 'Lead Belly' Ledbetter.
By sheer good fortune, Bryan Ferry's cover of the song was playing on my iPod as i was writing the poem. For the record, i had by then decided on the thematic thrust and the imagery of the ocean to close the poem.
