The section: "bobbing his head/always looking down/nodding/like a young boxer to instructions" is taken from Jack Kerouac's On the Road.
It's Sal Paradise describing Dean Moriarty near the beginning of the novel.
I thought it described perfectly something i had a habit of doing.
